The word "also" is missing from the NKJ (and others). I only noticed so, today.
This word has caused me to focus on this verse a good amount. This is because it's difficult to tell what word that word modifies, and which of two ways it modifies it. E.g.if it is there for the word "slothful", does that mean "also" is pointing to another slothful person? Or, does it mean the word "also" is pointing to another attribute besides slothful? If it's the first way, then the talebearer from the previous verse is both lazy and a gossiper. If it is the 2nd way (pointing to another attribute), then it is the slothful person in the current verse who is both lazy and a gossiper.
Another possibility is:
The word "also" be there for the phrase "in his work". If so, then the "he" of the current verse is slothful in work in addition to being slothful the same way as the previous verse's person. Not only that, but until we reached the word "also" and the phrase it modifies, we weren't yet informed that the previous verse's person was lazy at all!
If this is right, that God meant "also" to modify the phrase "in his work":
Isn't it enlightening, when so often when we give in to temptation, we think of it as being driven to do an action and giving in to that action. That is to say, why don't we think and pray, "Sorry, Lord, for being too lazy to think of the person i was hurting!" or "Sorry, Lord, for being too lazy to research the truth of the matter!" or both? How lazy is it to be drawn away and enticed?
