1: The progression of destructive power mentioned: contention "drama", then strokes or physical hits, then not only hurt but destruction, and then even a snare for the soul. ("Soul" can mean "whole life" at least according to the _New_ _Spirit_ _Filled_ _Life_ commentary.)
2: Verse 8 is like, "If you think that's bad, check out the gossiper! He (or she) shall hurt /you/ with his (or her) words, deep into your personal feelings."
