Hopefully the "for" in "born for adversity" is like how bandages are for wounds, rather than how swords are for wounds. But, it probably depends on the brother, the adversity, to whom he's a brother, and whatever else influences his decisions.

He can be both ways when tough love is needed. That is, a loving rebuke, correcting a person out of care, concern, and edification. It's when good feelings clash with actual goodness. At then, a brother can be for adversity both ways.
